About
Art has been the front, back, but mostly centre, of my life. Drawing with crayons on my newly painted bedroom walls when l was about 3 must have been an indication of my future.
We have all had special occasions, turning points, a change in direction or an inspirational encounter in our lives and l would like to share a few of mine.
After 21 years as a graphic artist, a chance encounter with the owner of the Yukon Gallery in Canada in 1979 opened a new door to my potential artistic future.
When l returned to NZ l made the risky decision to become a self-employed artist. Fortunately, it was a good decision. I joined the Ashburton Society of Arts in 1981 and had the privilege of attending a workshop with Austen Deans where he generously shared his watercolour techniques. He demonstrated a big new world of big transparent washes. No more drawing with my paint brush. l was off in a new direction.
Joining the Wellington Watercolour Society in 1994, (which later became Watercolour New Zealand) was one of the best decisions l ever made. The progressive and successful initiatives under the stewardship of Alfred Memelink, Sue Wild, John Toft and those who followed, created a wonderful watercolour family and a supportive environment which l am so proud and grateful to be part of.
Winning the Premier Award at “Splash” and being judged by your peers is such a heartfelt humbling experience – a vindication of my dedication to watercolour.
Another very memorable moment was when l was asked to be Patron of Watercolour NZ. Such an honour. l was delighted when my offer of a prize for a new “small painting” category for the annual watercolour NZ “Splash” exhibition was accepted by the Committee.
Over the years of participating in many exhibitions in NZ and around the world as well as tutoring in NZ, Australia, Norfolk Island and Rarotonga, my life has been enhanced by the happy heart watercolourists l have connected with along the way who have become lifetime friends. I am lucky that my watercolour style has progressed and endured over the years.
